Week 12: Denver Broncos at San Diego Chargers

DENVER BRONCOS @ SAN DIEGO CHARGERS
Vegas Line: Broncos + 5.5

Rob’s Line: Broncos + 6.5

How do you predict a game where one of the quarterbacks doesn’t seem to do much (if anything at all) for 55 minutes before playing like John Elway for the final 5 minutes, leading his team to an unlikely victory? Tim Tebow has done exactly that twice this season, first in Miami five weeks ago and then against the Jets last week.
The former was ridiculous as the whole comeback versus the Dolphins would’ve been deemed too far fetched had the script ever reached a Hollywood producer. Last week’s comeback was more conventional, but how Tebow managed to orchestrate a 95 yard touchdown drive in little under five minutes, running the winning TD in himself from 20 yards, will baffle all of those Jet defenders through to retirement.
Here’s why: on the previous eight possessions, the Broncos had punted every time. In addition, until that winning drive, Tebow had been responsible for just 80 yards on Denver’s first eleven possessions. On the final drive, Tebow can lay claim to 92 of the 95 yards. These stats are ridiculous, but it’s making Tebow’s career completely unforgettable, no matter how short it turns out to be.
The Broncos are on a three game winning streak, but you feel as though it could all come crashing down at any moment and it’s what makes Denver so compelling right now. So, can San Diego, a team on a horrible five game skid, put a spanner in Tebow’s works and his playoff aspirations? Quite simply, yes.
As has been written a thousand times this season, the Chargers are highly talented with the lingering suspicion that they possess a soft underbelly. I don’t like calling out people in this game who deserve better treatment so I’ll attempt to be diplomatic. Coach Norv Turner is a brilliant football mind whose knowledge of the game goes deep, but it’s not what the San Diego Chargers need. Can you imagine Jim Harbaugh in charge of this team? I’m in no doubt they’d be headed to the playoffs already. How frustrating is all that waste of talent and how frustrating is it being a Chargers fan right now?
I fully expect Turner not to be there in 2012 and it may be the best thing to happen to this franchise in quite some time. I could give you the reasons why I think San Diego are good things to cover the spread, but I’ve done that all season long and am tired of wiping the egg from my face. We all know what the Chargers can do on offense, particularly when passing the ball and that they’re susceptible on defense when up against a good rusher.
With Tebow being so mobile and the Denver coaching staff building their offensive gameplan around that, he may well find room to showcase his scrambling skills as the Broncos run a plethora of option plays and because I have so little faith in the Chargers to cover, I’m on the Tebow bandwagon this week and the points on offer.
